A pixie with a longer, sweeping fringe. The diagonal line flatters round and square faces.

  • Bixie

    Bixiemedium upkeep

Between a bob and a pixie: shaggy, ear-length layers. Easy step for someone growing out a pixie.

  • A-line bob

Shorter at the back and longer at the front. The front length falls past the jaw and slims a round face.

  • Asymmetric bob

One side longer than the other. The uneven line breaks up a round or square outline.

  • Lob (long bob)

    Lob (long bob)low upkeep

A bob that ends between the chin and the shoulders. One of the most forgiving cuts for any face shape.

A square face has a forehead, cheekbones and jaw of about the same width, and a jaw with clear corners. It is a strong, photogenic shape. The best haircuts for square faces keep that strength but soften the corners with layers, movement and off-center lines, and avoid blunt lines that end exactly at the jaw. Here is what usually works for women and men, and which cuts need a small change.

How to tell if your face is square

Pull your hair back and look straight into a mirror. On a square face, the forehead, the cheekbones and the jaw are close to the same width, and the jaw turns a clear corner below the ears instead of curving. The face is about as long as it is wide, or only slightly longer.

If your jaw is wide but the face is clearly longer than it is wide, you may be closer to a long or rectangular face; the long face guide fits better. If the jaw curves softly and the cheeks are the widest part, compare with round.

02

Best haircuts for square faces (women)

  • Long layers: length past the shoulders with layers that start around the cheekbones.
  • Textured lob: a long bob with movement and ends that fall below the jaw, not at it.
  • A-line or asymmetric bob: a longer front or an uneven line breaks up the square outline.
  • Shoulder-length waves: soft waves around the jaw make the corners look rounder.
  • Shag or butterfly cut: lots of face-framing pieces and texture.
  • Side-swept or wispy bangs: a diagonal or broken fringe softens a wide forehead.
  • Long pixie or bixie: short works when there is softness on top and around the ears.

Ask for the shortest face-framing layer to start around the cheekbones and for the ends to be textured rather than cut in one straight line.

03

Best haircuts for square faces (men)

  • Textured crop: messy texture on top with short sides plays well with a strong jaw.
  • Side part with a taper fade: the part line adds a soft asymmetry.
  • Quiff or pompadour: height on top balances a wide jaw.
  • Crew cut or ivy league: classic short cuts that make a square face look sharp.
  • Buzz cut or high and tight: very short cuts suit a square face better than most shapes.
  • Messy medium or shoulder-length flow: longer hair with movement softens the jaw.

Men with square faces are lucky: the strong jaw makes short, structured cuts look good. Keep some length or texture on top so the head shape does not look boxy, and avoid very wide, full sides.

Haircuts to be careful with on a square face

None of these are banned. If you love one of them, the easy fix keeps the idea of the cut while softening the corners.

Square face: what to watch out for

  • Chin-length blunt bob

    Why it can be tricky
The straight line ends right at the jaw corners
    Easy fix
Go a little longer, or ask for an A-line or textured ends
  • Blunt straight-across bangs

    Why it can be tricky
Adds another horizontal line to a square outline
    Easy fix
Choose wispy, side-swept or curtain bangs
  • Micro bangs

    Why it can be tricky
Very short bangs widen the top half of the face
    Easy fix
Keep bangs at brow length or longer
  • Flat, center-parted straight hair

    Why it can be tricky
Frames the face like a box
    Easy fix
Add waves or layers, or try a side part
  • Very full sides on short hair (men)

    Why it can be tricky
Widens the head at jaw level
    Easy fix
Ask for a taper or fade on the sides

Curly and thick hair on a square face

Curly hair is a natural softener for a square face, as long as the volume sits above or below the jaw rather than right at it. Ask for layers that let curls stack around the cheekbones, or keep length past the shoulders. Thick straight hair benefits from internal layers or texturizing so it does not form a solid block at jaw level. For men with thick hair, a short taper on the sides with texture on top keeps the outline clean.

Frequently asked questions

What haircut is best for a square face?

For women, long layers, a textured lob or shoulder-length waves with side-swept bangs. For men, a textured crop, a side part with a taper fade or a quiff. All of them soften the jaw corners or add height.

Should square faces get bangs?

Soft bangs usually work: wispy, side-swept or curtain bangs. Heavy blunt bangs and very short micro bangs add horizontal lines and are the types to be careful with.

Is a bob good for a square face?

Yes, if it does not end exactly at the jaw. An A-line, asymmetric or textured bob that falls a little below the jaw works better than a blunt chin-length bob.

What haircut makes a square face look softer?

Cuts with movement and diagonal lines: layers starting near the cheekbones, waves, a side part and wispy bangs. Straight lines at the jaw do the opposite.
