Haircuts for round faces

A round face is about as long as it is wide, with full cheeks and a soft jaw. The aim of most haircuts for round faces is to create the illusion of more length and a few angles: height on top, length past the jaw, and lines that run diagonally instead of straight across. Here are the cuts that usually do that best, for women and for men.

Round is selected below. Switch to another face shape if you are between two shapes.

Your face shape

  • Long pixie with side bangs· medium upkeep

A pixie with a longer, sweeping fringe. The diagonal line flatters round and square faces.

  • A-line bob· medium upkeep

Shorter at the back and longer at the front. The front length falls past the jaw and slims a round face.

  • Asymmetric bob· high upkeep

One side longer than the other. The uneven line breaks up a round or square outline.

  • Lob (long bob)· low upkeep

A bob that ends between the chin and the shoulders. One of the most forgiving cuts for any face shape.

  • Textured lob with side part· low upkeep

A lob with choppy ends and a deep side part. Adds movement and lengthens a round face.

Do you really have a round face?

Pull your hair back and look straight into a mirror. If your face is about as wide across the cheeks as it is long, the cheeks are the widest part, and the jaw curves without a clear corner, you probably have a round face. If the jaw has a sharp corner, you may be closer to square; if the face is a little longer than it is wide, you may be oval. The face shape guide covers all six shapes.

Best haircuts for round faces (women)

  • A-line bob: shorter at the back and longer at the front, so the front pieces fall below the jaw.
  • Long layers: length past the shoulders with layers that start below the chin.
  • Side-swept bangs: the diagonal line breaks up the width of the cheeks.
  • Long pixie with side bangs: short cuts can work on round faces when there is height on top and a sweeping fringe.
  • Textured lob with a deep side part: movement and an off-center part add angles.
  • Butterfly cut: face-framing layers that start below the cheekbones.

In all of these, the key is where the shortest layer ends. Ask for face-framing pieces to start at or below the chin, not at the cheeks.

Best haircuts for round faces (men)

  • Quiff: height at the front with short sides makes the face look longer.
  • Pompadour: more volume and shine; needs thick hair and daily styling.
  • Side part with a fade: the part line and tight sides add structure.
  • Faux hawk: a ridge of height down the center, with shorter sides.
  • Textured crop with a high fade: a lower-effort option that still keeps the sides tight.

Keep the sides short and the top longer. A beard that is a little longer at the chin than at the cheeks also helps a round face look longer.

Frequently asked questions

What haircut is best for a round face?

For longer hair, an A-line bob or long layers with side-swept bangs. For short men's hair, a quiff or side part with a fade. They all add height or length and create angles.

Can I have short hair with a round face?

Yes. Short cuts work when they add height on top and keep the sides close, like a long pixie with side bangs or a quiff for men. Avoid short cuts that are full and round at cheek level.

Should round faces get bangs?

Side-swept bangs and long curtain bangs that fall past the cheekbones usually flatter round faces. Short, full, straight-across bangs are the type to be careful with.

What haircut makes a round face look slimmer?

Cuts that add length and vertical lines: layers that fall below the chin, a deep side part, and height at the crown. Volume at the cheeks or a blunt line at the chin does the opposite.
