Should I get bangs? What you would look like with bangs
Bangs are one of the biggest changes you can make with the smallest amount of hair, which is exactly why the decision feels risky. The good news: there is a type of bangs for almost every face shape, and some styles are easy to grow out if you change your mind. This guide helps you choose the right bangs, or decide that you should skip them for now.

Bangs for my face shape
Bangs change the visible length of your face. Full, straight bangs make a face look shorter and wider. Long, parted, or side-swept bangs keep the length and add soft angles.
| Face shape | Try | Be careful with |
|---|---|---|
| Oval | Almost any: blunt, curtain, wispy, Birkin | Very heavy bangs that hide your eyebrows |
| Round | Side-swept or long curtain bangs that fall past the cheekbones | Short, full, straight-across bangs |
| Square | Wispy, curtain, or side-swept bangs with soft edges | Thick blunt bangs that repeat the strong jaw line |
| Heart | Curtain bangs, wispy bangs, side-swept bangs | Very short micro bangs that open the forehead |
| Oblong (long) | Blunt bangs, Birkin bangs, full curtain bangs | Very thin, short bangs that do not shorten the face |
| Diamond | Wispy or curtain bangs that add width at the forehead | Side parts with no fringe at all |
Should I get bangs? Five honest questions
- Do you have a strong cowlick at the front? It can make bangs split or stand up; curtain bangs handle cowlicks best.
- Is your skin oily on the forehead? Bangs get greasy faster and may need washing or dry shampoo daily.
- Will you style them? Most bangs need a quick blow-dry each morning, even when the rest of your hair air-dries.
- Can you get trims every two to four weeks? Blunt and micro bangs grow into your eyes quickly.
- Do you push your hair off your face when you work out or concentrate? Then start with long curtain bangs you can tuck away.
If you answered yes to the first two and no to the last three, bangs may be more hassle than they are worth right now. Face-framing layers give some of the same effect with less upkeep.
Bangs and hair type
Fine hair works well with wispy or curtain bangs, because a light fringe does not take much hair away from the rest of your style. Thick hair can carry blunt bangs, but ask the stylist to thin them from inside so they do not look like a solid block. Curly hair needs bangs cut dry, curl by curl, because curls spring up when they dry. Very straight, slippery hair can make side-swept bangs fall flat; curtain bangs with a round brush usually hold better.
How to try bangs before you cut
Start long. Curtain bangs cut at the cheekbones can always be cut shorter later, and they blend into face-framing layers if you grow them out. A clip-in fringe is a cheap test you can wear for a day. You can also flip your ponytail forward over your forehead and pin it to see the outline in a mirror.
WhatHaircut is also building a try-on preview: you upload a selfie and see a chosen style of bangs on your own photo before you visit the salon. It is planned as a paid, per-image feature and is not on sale yet. Leave your email above to hear when it opens.
Frequently asked questions
How do I know if bangs will suit me?
Check your face shape and your forehead: if your face is long or oval and you do not have a strong front cowlick, most bangs will suit you. For round and square faces, side-swept and curtain bangs are usually the safest choice.
What would I look like with bangs?
The fastest real-world test is a clip-in fringe or pinning your ponytail forward over your forehead. A photo preview of bangs on your own selfie is planned on WhatHaircut but is not open yet.
Are curtain bangs good for round faces?
Yes, when they are long enough to fall past the cheekbones. The parted shape creates two diagonal lines that make the face look longer. Short, full curtain bangs work less well on round faces.
How long do bangs take to grow out?
Hair grows roughly a centimeter, or about half an inch, a month for many people, so short bangs can take several months to reach your cheekbones. Curtain bangs are the easiest to grow out because they already blend into the sides.
