What haircut should I get? A men's guide by face shape
Most men pick a haircut by asking the barber for 'the usual' or by pointing at a photo. Both can work, but you get a better result if you know three things first: your face shape, how thick your hair is, and what your front hairline is doing. This guide covers all three and ends with a short list you can show your barber.

Haircut for my face shape (men)
Barbers balance a face with height and side length. Short sides make a face look longer; more length at the sides makes it look wider. Use the table to choose a direction, then pick the exact cut by hair type.
| Face shape | Good choices | Why | Be careful with |
|---|---|---|---|
| Oval | Crew cut, quiff, slick back, buzz cut, side part | Balanced proportions; most cuts work | A heavy fringe that hides your forehead |
| Round | Quiff, pompadour, faux hawk, side part with fade | Height on top and tight sides add length | Buzz cuts and bowl shapes that stay round |
| Square | Crew cut, textured crop, messy medium, Ivy League | Texture softens a strong jaw | Very boxy flat tops |
| Heart | Textured fringe, side part, French crop, medium length | Covers part of a wide forehead | Tall volume and very short sides |
| Oblong (long) | French crop, Caesar cut, textured fringe, crew cut | A fringe and fuller sides shorten the face | Pompadours and tall quiffs |
| Diamond | Textured fringe, messy medium, crew cut | Fullness at the forehead and chin balances cheekbones | Slicked-back hair with skin-fade sides |
Hair density and texture: the second filter
Fine or thinning hair looks fuller when it is shorter and textured. A crew cut, textured crop, or French crop gives the barber room to add texture without exposing the scalp. Long, slicked-back styles tend to separate and show more scalp under light.
Thick hair can carry undercuts, quiffs, and pompadours, but it needs bulk removed or it will puff out at the sides. Wavy hair suits messy medium cuts and middle parts. Curly and coily hair often looks best with the curl kept on top and a taper or fade on the sides, which also makes the curl pattern easier to manage.
How much styling will you actually do?
- Zero minutes: buzz cut, crew cut, high and tight, short twists.
- About two minutes with a little product: textured crop, French crop, Caesar cut, taper fade with short top.
- Five minutes or more, often with a blow-dryer: quiff, pompadour, slick back, side part with a hard part line.
- Grow-out patience needed: shoulder-length flow and long layered styles take months of awkward lengths.
A cut that needs daily styling looks worse than a simple cut if you skip the styling. Be honest about your mornings when you choose.
What to say to your barber
Bring two photos: the cut you want, ideally on someone with hair like yours, and one of a cut you do not want. Tell the barber the clipper guard you liked last time if you know it, whether you want a fade or a taper on the sides, and how you style your hair day to day. If your hairline is receding, say so; a good barber will adjust the fringe and the top length. Our receding hairline guide has more detail on that.
Frequently asked questions
What haircut should I get as a guy?
If you are unsure, a crew cut or a taper fade with a short textured top suits almost every face shape and hair type, needs little styling, and is easy to change next time. From there, add height if your face is round or a fringe if your face is long.
What haircut suits a round face for men?
Cuts with height on top and short sides, such as a quiff, faux hawk, pompadour, or side part with a fade. They make the face look longer. The round face guide has more options.
Which men's haircut is best for thin hair?
Shorter, textured cuts usually work best: crew cut, textured crop, French crop, or Caesar cut. Avoid long hair combed straight back, which tends to separate and show the scalp.
How often should men get a haircut?
Short faded cuts usually need a touch-up every two to four weeks to keep the fade clean. Longer cuts can go six to eight weeks. It depends on how fast your hair grows and how sharp you want it to look.
