- 1

Chin-length bobmedium upkeep
A bob that ends at the chin. Adds width at the jaw, which balances a narrow chin.
- 2

Blunt bobmedium upkeep
A one-length bob with a sharp edge. Makes fine hair look thicker at the ends.
- 3

Lob (long bob)low upkeep
A bob that ends between the chin and the shoulders. One of the most forgiving cuts for any face shape.
- 4

Shaglow upkeep
Lots of choppy layers, often with curtain bangs. Adds width at the sides, which shortens a long face.
- 5

Wolf cutlow upkeep
A mix of a shag and a mullet: volume on top, wispy length at the back.
A long face (also called oblong or rectangular) is clearly longer than it is wide, with a straight cheek line and a forehead, cheeks and jaw of similar width. The best haircuts for long faces do the opposite of what round faces need: they add width at the sides and break up the length with bangs, while avoiding extra height on top and very long straight hair. Here is what usually works for women and men.

How to tell if you have a long face
Pull your hair back and look straight into a mirror. A long face is clearly longer than it is wide, often by more than one and a half times. The sides run fairly straight from the temples to the jaw, and the forehead, cheeks and jaw are about the same width. The chin can be rounded or square.
If the face tapers to a rounded chin and the cheekbones are a little wider than the jaw, you are probably oval. If the forehead is high, the face can look long even when the proportions are closer to oval; a fringe helps in both cases.
Best haircuts for long faces (women)
- Chin-length or blunt bob: the width at jaw level shortens the face visually.
- Bob with bangs: the classic answer; the fringe cuts the length and the bob adds width.
- Lob with waves: shoulder-length waves add volume at the sides.
- Shag or wolf cut: volume and texture around the cheeks.
- Birkin, blunt or curtain bangs: a fringe takes away forehead height.
- Layered curls or shoulder-length waves: width is easy with natural texture.
- Side-swept long hair: if you want length, add layers and a side part.
If you keep long hair, ask for layers that start at the cheekbones and style with some wave. Long, flat, one-length hair is the cut that makes a long face look longest.
Best haircuts for long faces (men)
- Textured fringe: hair brushed forward reduces forehead height.
- French crop: short sides with a straight fringe.
- Crew cut or ivy league: short, with a top that stays low.
- Taper fade with a short top: keeps some width at the sides instead of a skin fade.
- Messy medium or middle-part curtains: medium length that falls to the sides.
- Curly top with a fade: curls add width when the sides are not shaved too high.
Men with long faces should keep the top lower and the sides a little fuller than most barbers do by default. Ask for a low or mid taper instead of a high skin fade.
Haircuts to be careful with on a long face
None of these are banned. If you love one of them, the easy fix keeps the idea of the cut while adding width.

Why bangs help a long face
Bangs are the quickest way to make a long face look shorter, because they cover part of the forehead and add a horizontal line. Blunt or birkin bangs have the strongest effect; curtain bangs are softer and easier to grow out. For men, a textured fringe brushed forward does the same job. If you are unsure, try curtain bangs first: they work on most hair types and can be pushed to the sides if you do not like them.
Frequently asked questions
What haircut is best for a long face?
For women, a bob with bangs, a chin-length bob or a lob with waves. For men, a textured fringe, a French crop or a crew cut with a low taper. They add width and reduce visible length.
Should long faces have bangs?
Yes, bangs are one of the best things for a long face. Blunt, birkin and curtain bangs all reduce forehead height; for men, a textured fringe does the same.
Is long hair bad for a long face?
Not bad, but long straight one-length hair can make the face look longer. Add layers that start at the cheekbones, some wave and a fringe or side part.
Is an oblong face the same as a long face?
Yes. Oblong, long and rectangular are names for the same shape: clearly longer than wide, with a forehead, cheeks and jaw of similar width.
Is the AI haircut analysis open?
Yes. Since October 2026 the selfie analysis is open and free, with no account needed: it estimates your face shape, hairline and hair type and suggests cuts. Try-on previews on your own photo use credits. You can also pick your face shape by hand without uploading anything.
What happens to my selfie?

For a try-on preview it is kept only until the preview is made, and previews are deleted after 30 days, or sooner if you delete them. We do not sell photos or use them to train AI models.
