  • Chin-length bob
    4

    Chin-length bobmedium upkeep

A bob that ends at the chin. Adds width at the jaw, which balances a narrow chin.

  • Blunt bob
    5

    Blunt bobmedium upkeep

A one-length bob with a sharp edge. Makes fine hair look thicker at the ends.

An oval face is a little longer than it is wide, with cheekbones that are slightly wider than the jaw and a softly rounded chin. Because nothing needs to be balanced, haircuts for oval faces can go short or long, with or without bangs. The real question is not "what suits an oval face" but which cut suits your hair type and the time you spend styling. This guide shows the best options for women and men, and the few details that can still go wrong.

How to tell if your face is oval

Pull your hair back and look straight into a mirror, or take a front-facing photo at eye level. An oval face is longer than it is wide, but not by much, usually about one and a half times as long. The widest part is across the cheekbones, the forehead is a little narrower, and the jaw tapers gently to a rounded chin with no sharp corners.

If length and width look almost equal and the cheeks are full, you are probably closer to round. If the face is clearly long with straight sides, look at the long face guide. If your jaw has clear corners, compare with square. Many people sit between oval and one other shape; in that case, follow the advice for the second shape, because oval works with almost everything anyway.

Best haircuts for oval faces (women)

  • Pixie cut or long pixie: an oval face can carry very short hair because it shows a balanced outline.
  • Blunt bob or chin-length bob: a strong, clean line that sits well on an oval jaw.
  • Lob (long bob): the safest all-rounder, easy to wear straight or wavy.
  • Shag or wolf cut: lots of texture and choppy layers for thick or wavy hair.
  • Butterfly cut or face-framing layers: long length with shorter pieces around the face.
  • Long one-length hair: works well here, while it can drag a long face down.
  • Any bangs: blunt, wispy, curtain or birkin bangs all suit an oval face; choose by forehead height and cowlicks.

With an oval face, let your hair decide. Fine hair usually looks fuller in a blunt bob or lob; thick hair looks lighter in a shag or long layers; curly hair does well in layered curls with curly bangs.

Best haircuts for oval faces (men)

  • Crew cut or buzz cut: short, low maintenance and a clean frame for an oval face.
  • Textured crop or French crop: short sides, a textured top and a short fringe.
  • Quiff or pompadour: height at the front for thick hair and a bit of styling time.
  • Side part with a taper fade: a classic office-friendly cut.
  • Slick back or undercut: an oval face can show the whole forehead without looking long.
  • Middle-part curtains or a medium messy cut: longer options that suit an oval face well.

Men with oval faces can also wear a fully shaved head or a skin fade. Pick by hairline and density: if the front is thinning, shorter textured cuts usually look fuller than long hair combed back.

What to watch with an oval face

An oval face is easy to cut for, but two things can still spoil a good haircut. The first is covering it up: very heavy bangs that hide the whole forehead plus long curtains of hair on both sides can make an oval face look narrower and longer than it is. Show at least some of your forehead or cheekbones.

The second is ignoring your hair. A pixie cut on very thick, coarse hair can puff out at the sides, and a long one-length cut on very fine hair can look flat. Tell your stylist about your hair type and your morning routine, not just the photo you like.

Frequently asked questions

What haircut is best for an oval face?

Almost any cut works on an oval face. For women, a lob, long layers or a blunt bob are the easiest wins; for men, a textured crop, crew cut or quiff. Choose by hair type and how much styling you want to do.

Can oval faces have short hair?

Yes. An oval face is one of the best shapes for short hair, from a pixie cut or bixie for women to a buzz cut, crew cut or skin fade for men.

Do bangs suit an oval face?

Yes, all common types do: blunt, wispy, curtain, side-swept and birkin bangs. Pick by forehead height, cowlicks and how often you want to trim them.

How do I know if I have an oval face or a long face?

An oval face is about one and a half times as long as it is wide and tapers to a rounded chin. A long face looks clearly longer, with straight cheek lines and a forehead, cheeks and jaw of similar width.
